Present Day Palace

The Imperial Palace is still the home of the Japanese Emperor. While the country its self does not have the same form of government that it used to the Emperor still holds an important role and that is representing the country.

The palace has received a lot of changes though and while the old traditional residency is still intact a more modern residence was constructed for the current Emperor and Empress which is located in the Fukiage Gardens. The modern residence was designed by Shozo Uchii, and it was completed in 1993.

The palace is generally closed to the public (except for on New Years, and the Emperor's Birthday), but there are certain parts of the palace including the Imperial Household Agency and East Gardens.

There are even tours that you can take to explore the palace, and the East Gardens are one of the most relaxing and well-known places in Japan.
